Choosing a tutoring starting point

Look for patterns, then ask questions. A difficult assignment does not always point to the same need. Consider whether the challenge is understanding the material, organizing ideas, remembering a process or knowing how to start. Bring examples of schoolwork and your student’s observations to an initial conversation. A baseline assessment can help turn those observations into a focused plan.

Building a reading conversation

Ask for evidence, not just a summary. After a short passage, invite your student to explain the central idea in their own words. Ask what detail supports that idea and whether a word or sentence changed their understanding. Keep the conversation manageable and curious. If reading consistently feels frustrating, discuss individualized support.

Preparing for an online assessment

Bring a picture of the learner. Think about strengths, recent challenges and what you hope tutoring will help with. Recent assignments or teacher feedback may be useful to share on screen. If test preparation is the goal, note the exam and any known timeline. Test your camera and microphone beforehand, and ask us anything about what the assessment involves.

Frequently asked questions

Have something else in mind? We’re happy to help.

How do I know which tutoring program my child needs?

Start with a conversation about schoolwork, concerns and goals. A baseline assessment helps identify current strengths and the areas where focused support may be useful.

What happens during the baseline assessment?

It takes place online in a live video session. We review the student’s current skills, strengths, challenges and academic goals to shape a personalized learning plan. Contact us to discuss the format, availability and any applicable fee.

How do online lessons work?

Lessons are live and in real time, not pre-recorded. Your student meets their tutor over video, works problems on a shared digital whiteboard, and practices between sessions with materials chosen for their plan.

What do we need for online lessons?

A computer or tablet with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a quiet place to work. Headphones help. We’ll send a short setup guide before the first session.

Do you offer one-on-one tutoring?

Yes. One-on-one online tutoring gives individual attention focused on the learner’s needs and goals. Small online group classes are also available.

Which tests do you prepare students for?

We prepare students for the ISEE, SSAT, SHSAT, TACHS, SAT and ACT. The right program depends on the student’s goals and the requirements of the schools they’re considering.

Do you provide SHSAT preparation?

Yes. SHSAT preparation includes ELA, reading comprehension, revising and editing, mathematics, timed practice and test-taking strategies.

Do you provide ISEE and SSAT preparation?

Yes. We help students build relevant verbal, reading, quantitative, mathematics and writing skills, tailored to the appropriate test level.

Can you help with reading, writing and grammar?

Yes. English tutoring helps students read closely, find key ideas, understand vocabulary in context, organize essays, revise sentences and write more clearly.

Do you offer math tutoring?

Yes. Math instruction focuses on foundational understanding, challenging concepts, problem solving, school support and test preparation.

Do you work with ESL/ELL students?

Yes. We support children and adults developing English reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and academic language skills.

How often should my child attend, and how soon will we see progress?

It depends on starting skills, goals, school workload and any testing timeline. We recommend a schedule after understanding the student’s needs and review progress regularly so instruction can be adjusted. Specific grades, scores or admissions outcomes are not guaranteed.
